<p>BLOODHOUND SSC (Supersonic Car) is leading the latest attempt to break the world land speed record. BLOODHOUND, designed and built in Britain, is powered by a Rolls Royce Eurofighter Jet Engine and Hybrid Rocket and delivers the equivalent of 135,000 horse power (equivalent to the power of 112 Bugatti Veyron Super Sport cars).</p>
<p>A life-size replica of the BLOODHOUND car will be based in Northampton College’s brand new state-of-the-art engineering studios to help inspire the next generation of engineers, and boost the number of pupils and students taking courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.</p>
<p>Primary, Secondary and College students, as well as the general public, are invited to a series of presentations, discussions and workshops from BLOODHOUND, Cosworth, Snap-on Tools, and many more.</p>

<p>Professor Endreny has produced a fascinating video explaining his research into stream restoration and how it&#8217;s changing in New York. His research involves tackling erosion and habitat creation by using natural channel design and ecological engineering. By using flumes and steps, Professor Endreny demonstrates how wildlife can survive and feed, not just on the surface water, but also in the habitat below.</p>

<p><strong>Process Control</strong> is a fundamental topic in all of the main branches of engineering, namely, Mechanical, Chemical and Civil Engineering, and is applicable to virtually all manufacturing and processing industries. For this reason it is essential that all engineering students are taught about the principles of Process Control.</p>
<p>Following response from customers, Armfield has introduced a comprehensive range of products designed to do just that, introducing the fundamental principles. Process Control is a practical subject, so exercises performed by students using laboratory equipment, is the most effective way of imparting a thorough understanding of the topic. Testing the stability of control loops on different processes clearly demonstrates at first-hand the importance of optimising the control parameters and the problems that can be associated with instability, time delays, etc.</p>
<p>The <strong>&#8216;Essentials of Process Control&#8217;</strong> (EPC) range features easy to use, highly visual and self-contained products, including PC software, ensuring that students have a clear understanding of the principles, yet the exercises are advanced enough to provide students with a thorough grounding in Process Control.</p>
<p><a href="http://discoverarmfield.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/pct50.jpg"><img class="alignright" title="PCT50" src="http://discoverarmfield.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/pct50.jpg?w=202&#038;h=300" alt="" width="202" height="300" /></a>As with the more sophisticated Armfield Process Control teaching equipment such as the <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong><a title="PCT40" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.co.uk/data/pct40/" target="_blank">PCT40 Basic Process Control System</a></strong></span>, the processes and controllers in the EPC range all have the ability to provide repeatable but variable disturbances to the process. This allows the control parameters to be tested, compared and optimised to suit a particular process configuration.</p>
<p>Products within the &#8216;Essentials of Process Control&#8217; series include PCT50 Level Control, PCT51 Flow Control, PCT52 Temperature Control, PCT53 Pressure Control, PCT54 Industrial PID Controller, PCT55 Programmable Logic Controller, and PCT56 Sensor Conditioning and Calibration Trainer. In addition, PCT54 Industrial PID Controller can be used as a general purpose PID controller, and PCT 55 Programmable Logic Controller can be used to control other items.</p>

<p>The Process Technology (PTEC) program at Los Medanos College in Northern California is one of more than 50 programs nationwide that are preparing students to be the operators in refineries, chemical plants and related industries. &#8220;Industry and societal expectations for safety and environmental stewardship in the process industry have never been higher than they are today. Advance process technology education for operators will take us to the next step toward zero safety and environmental incidents,&#8221; said David Kail, Director for the PTEC program.</p>
<p>David told us about the award-winning Los Medanos College program, and the way in which students utilise the Armfield UOP3CC Computer Controlled Distillation Column to gain real-life experience in the principles of distillation.</p>

<p><strong>Fluid dynamics</strong><br />
The <strong><a title="C7MkII" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.com/data/f1/c7mkii.php" target="_blank">C7-MkII Pipe Surge and Water Hammer Apparatus</a></strong> and <strong><a title="C11MkII" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.com/data/f1/c11mkii.php" target="_blank">C11-MkII Pipe Networks Accessory</a></strong> have been re-engineered as accessories rather than stand-alone products to make it easy for you to tailor your laboratory without committing to a major purchase of a bench for each experiment. By utilising these accessories on a bench, you can easily integrate the products into your labs cost effectively.</p>
<p><strong><a title="C11MkII" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.com/data/f1/c11mkii.php" target="_blank">C11-MkII Pipe Networks Accessory</a></strong> has been further enhanced with the pipe networks and fittings in a permanent arrangement, with isolating valves to choose the various configurations. You can now see the flow through clear acrylic test pipes; and a hand-held pressure meter replaces a manometer to measure head losses in the pipe networks.</p>
<p>We have also introduced our new <strong><a title="S16" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.com/data/s16/" target="_blank">S16 Hydraulic Flow Demonstrator</a></strong> bench accessory which has been developed to overcome difficulties in understanding the fundamental hydraulics concept of energy and momentum and enables practical demonstrations of the effects of changes in upstream water level, downstream water level etc.</p>
<p><strong>Rotodynamic machines</strong><br />
Armfield has a brand new addition to the range, introduced because you told us you needed it! Due to popular customer demand, we have launched the <strong><a title="F1-32" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.com/data/f1/f1_32.php" target="_blank">F1-32 Francis Turbine</a></strong>. Using the <strong><a title="F1-10" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.com/data/f1" target="_blank">F1-10 Hydraulics Bench</a></strong>, you can demonstrate power, efficiency and torque of a Francis Turbine at various speeds, and the product is designed to perfectly complement the <strong><a title="F1-25" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.com/data/f1/f1_25.php" target="_blank">F1-25 Demonstration Pelton Turbine</a></strong>.</p>

<p>Richard Hammond is a UK radio and television presenter, writer and journalist that is best known for his co-hosting of Top Gear (<a href="http://www.topgear.com/uk">www.topgear.com/uk</a>) and Brainiac: Science Abuse (<a href="http://sky1.sky.com/show/brainiac">http://sky1.sky.com/show/brainiac</a>). He recently presented a fascinating program investigating the phenomenal engineering that went into building the World&#8217;s tallest hotel, Burj Al Arab in Dubai.</p>
<p>Highlights including ingenious engineering for defences against brutal seas, capacitors to prevent electrical fires, rotating fixings to combat steel expansion and regulation of the cool interior are not to be missed. <p>Armfield Ltd has been designing and supplying <a title="Armfield flumes" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.co.uk/search/index.php?type=product&amp;q=S" target="_blank">open channel facilities</a> (flumes) to hydraulic laboratories throughout the world for over 50 years. We have now introduced a new suite of standard research flumes, both tilting and fixed bed, available in several working lengths and a variety of operating modes. Also added to the range are computer control and data logging packages for S6-MkII Flumes.</p>
<p>As the world’s major commercial designer and manufacturer of flumes for laboratory research, Armfield has lead the way with innovative designs ranging from the self-supporting bed in our highly acclaimed <a title="S6 MkII tilting flumes" href="http://www.discoverarmfield.co.uk/data/s6/" target="_blank">S6-MKII range of tilting flumes</a> to the flat pack design for fixed bed flumes. Modular construction methods have allowed great versatility with the options to expand, change or move the flumes with relative ease and at low cost.  Ergonomically, Armfield flumes offer ease of use and minimum space allocation, while the choice of materials for the wetted parts keep maintenance time and costs to a minimum.</p>
<p>Accuracy of the working section in terms of deflection under load is a paramount consideration, as is maximizing the working length under flow conditions. Armfield has the experience and expertise to ensure both of these critical elements are taken care of by guaranteeing deflection figures in the first instance and unique entry and exit designs in the latter.</p>
<p>Recent innovations include computer control and real time data logging packages to give both highly controlled repeatability and quick and easy data gathering.  S6-MkII-50 Software Control &amp; Data Acquisition Package includes an inverter for electronic speed control for the flow channel pump. The package can also control the powered jacking system for setting slope bed. S6-MkII-90 Data Logging and Instrumentation System is included with S6-MkII-50 Package; and can be utilised to record slope of bed, pressure distribution, single low range differential pressure, and water temperature.</p>
<p>We are delighted to announce an extended range of standard research flumes, both tilting and fixed bed, with cross section options to the working section of 600mm x 600mm and 1000mm x 1000mm. In both cases, they are available in lengths ranging from 7.5m to 15m, in increments of 2.5m working length, and are available in a variety of operating modes.</p>
<p>These, and other products from the Armfield range of open channels for both teaching and research, are featured in a new full colour brochure which lists not only the various equipment, but also optional accessories including wave makers and instrumentation. There are also useful hints and advice to those preparing to invest in such a major facility, making this brochure a comprehensive guide to hydraulics and hydrology.  </p>
